Technical visit to Xiamen in Fujian Province
By Ir TAM Wing Shing

The EL Division organised a four-day technical visit to Xiamen in Fujian Province from 6 - 9 September 2019. 15 delegates attended.

Xiamen is a sub-provincial city in the south-eastern Fujian Province and covers an area of about 1,700 sq km with a population of more than four million. During the visit, the delegates visited a manufacturing plant of ABB. It covers an area of 430,000 sq m and comprises a Technology Experience Centre and a production line for air circuit breakers, low voltage (LV) switchboards and medium voltage (MV) switchgear.

In the centre, the delegates saw a variety of technology developments and experienced the remote factory testing capabilities of digital platforms and i-Cloud. They also examined various electrical products, including MV switchgear for electric vehicle (EV) charging sockets. They visited a laboratory which simulates electricity flows in different segments such as power grids, digital substations, industry, transport and buildings, and observed the performance of the products under a range of operational conditions for industry, utilities and infrastructure.

The manufacturing plant produces a full range of MV and LV switchboards including switchgear, distribution automation products, measuring and sensing devices, modular substation packages and related services.

A remote factory acceptance testing programme was displayed in the industry section of the centre. This demonstrated a factory production site and real time equipment testing connected to the Cloud via a digital interface. As introduced, the centre could check switchgear deliveries using real time video and audio services via a range of digital devices, including desk computers and mobile devices.

Besides advanced technology development in the electrical industry, the implementation of a “green” environment in Xiamen was also observed. This included, EV charging facilities and infrastructure - even for rural areas - to reduce pollution emissions from diesel vehicles. The visit enlightened the delegates to the fact that Xiamen is developing and creating an advanced technology as well as a “green” city.
