Technical visit to China Mobile 5G Innovation Centre "Hong Kong Open Lab"
By Ir Homan HO

The EN Division organised the captioned visit on 25 October 2019. 40 participants joined. The visit aimed to provide a better understanding of China Mobile’s (CMHK) 5G achievements, their future 5G development plans and their mission of supporting local business partners in applying, developing and testing new 5G applications.

The visit was divided into two parts. In the first part, Mr Alex Cheng, the Principal Engineer of CMHK, introduced the background of the Open Lab. He explained their ambition to help develop the 5G ecosystem in Hong Kong by complementing the existing 4G network with 5G infrastructure, and to promote 5G technologies along with new communication technologies, such as artificial intelligence, the internet of things, the cloud, big data and edge computing.

The second part was a demonstration session on the 5G applications which have already been implemented. One of the highlights was 4K real time video streaming. A 5G base station was set up in its flagship store in Mongkok and there was a 4K real time video broadcast back to the lab through CMHK 5G network which provided a high bandwidth and low latency communication network. It demonstrated the power of 5G and how it could change the community.

Through the visit, CMHK demonstrated its readiness to help Hong Kong accelerate the development of the 5G ecosystem for local business partners. Various 5G applications, including an autonomous vehicle, intelligent robot, high-resolution watch-on-demand and video streaming services, and drone and smart city applications were showcased. On behalf of the EN Division, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to CMHK for providing this fruitful visit to our members.
