2019 President’s Reception in the UK
By Ir Michael WAN
The UK Chapter hosted a reception for the HKIE President Ir Ringo Yu at the Institute of Directors (IoD) in London on 10 October 2019. More than 50 distinguished guests from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) London, fellow engineering societies, professional bodies and the engineering industry were greeted by President Ir Yu, Immediate Past President Ir Thomas K C Chan, Senior Vice President Ir Dr Yuen Pak-leung and Past President Ir Peter Y Wong.
The evening started with a warm welcoming speech by the Chairman of the UK Chapter, Ir Yan Zhou, who also briefly reported the works of the UK Chapter in the past year. This was followed by an inspiring Presidential Address from President Ir Yu. The theme of “Knowledge Transfer • Our Commitment for the Future (教澤廣被 源遠流長)” was very well-received by the audience and provided them with much food for thought.
President Ir Yu stressed the importance of knowledge transfer within our profession, beyond our borders and to the next generation, as this is the key to the sustainable success of engineers and their pursuit of excellence in this fast-changing world. The audience were encouraged to share their knowledge and experience and keep learning, as it is only new ideas that have the power to build bridges not only across borders, but also across cultures and into the future.
The networking sessions were as pleasurable as the dinner. The HKIE members and friends also greeted the new Director-General of the HKETO, Ms Winky So. As in previous years, the President’s Reception greatly reinforced the close relationship that generations of Hong Kong and UK engineers have shared. The UK Chapter will strive to build on this strong foundation to help promote the Hong Kong engineering profession and serve the HKIE members in the UK.
